Queensland requires an occupational licence for anyone carrying out plumbing or drainage work, plus a separate contractor licence for the company taking the job on, and the QBCC issues both. The occupational licence proves trade skill; the contractor licence proves the company behind the job can run the business side and meet its financial obligations.
Three licence classes cover the trades themselves:
Plumber
authorises the supply and fixture side, except jobs needing their own endorsement.
Drainer
authorises the below-ground drainage side, again outside anything needing an endorsement.
Gasfitter
gas work legally belongs to licensed gasfitters, covering installing, altering, repairing, servicing, testing or certifying any gas system, its pipework and connections. Before a gas job starts, you are entitled to sight that licence.
How Plumbing Work Is Regulated in Queensland
Two bodies share the oversight: the QBCC looks after licensing and the notifiable work register, while Brisbane City Council processes applications, issues permits and sends inspectors out. Minor work, notifiable work and permit work all need a licence holder on the tools.
